Purposeful Teams™ WorldsView Facilitation Accreditation Feedback

Pt Header

Hi everyone!                                                                                                                                           February 2011

Fortune and I had the privilege of attending the Purposeful TeamsTM WorldsView Consulting Facilitator Accreditation (WFA) from Wednesday Friday last week.  Not only were we guided by two wonderful masters, viz. Renate Landman and Melanie Kiley…Brett Yeatman, Managing Director of WorldsViewTM Consulting, also graced us with his presence for the 3 days!  Being in Brett’s presence was really special and VERY inspiring!  We were privileged to get the inside track on the philosophy, approach and many of the exercises that make up the Purposeful TeamsTM process.   Renate is a seasoned Purposeful TeamsTM facilitator and has had opportunities to apply the Purposeful TeamsTM intervention in many different settings - from acquisitions, to project teams to executive strategic development sessions to new start up teams…and more!  And then of course we know the magic that Melanie brings to the process.  Then Alison popped in for a bit and so did Karin.  Put that together with a room of superb delegates, and WOW, what an experience!  So needless to say, I certainly got more than I thought I would get!

Our co-learner
We were blessed to have a nice mix of delegates on the programme.  We had 3 Sanlam people (Laetitia, Arnold and Scotty) who could help us stay grounded and real with regard to implementation.  Fortune and I represented the Symphonia associate community.  Simon is the new WorldsViewTM Consulting partner from Results Coaching in Durban.  And then there was Sheetal, a former nun from Kenya (WOW) who was just an amazing person to have in the room.

The Purposeful Teams intervention
Let me start by saying that it is quite a challenge to truly experience the magic of the process in a WFA.  The team is not a natural team with a compelling mandate.  That said, we still experienced quite a bit of the transforming power that the intervention has to offer!  The process resonated VERY strongly with me because I have often been in situations where clients have asked me to facilitate team processes or strategic development sessions.  I have always had to design something and hope for the best result.  This process is so simple and yet so powerful.  I think that the Purposeful TeamsTM footprint will soon exceed the Nine Conversations in LeadershipTM footprint.  Brett stated it very nicely, ‘Nine Conversations in LeadershipTM is designed for leadership teams who are somewhat stable whereas Purposeful TeamsTM is more suited to teams who are a bit unsettled’, which describes most teams.  I love the way the team is put through all the team development phases within the intervention and I love the philosophy and fit with the Nine Conversations in LeadershipTM process.

I love the head, heart, hands coming through again and I love that the process looks at who the team is, what the team desires and then what the team should do.  There are also strong links to engaging and enrolling individuals around an organisation’s purpose.  It also helps teams create purpose and meaning and as a result design high performing teams.  I also like the sustainability component in the process.

Personal key learnings
I volunteered to go first with the facilitation on the first day, which meant I had to do my bit without much time to familiarise myself with the process or content.  It was a humbling experience!  Never before did I have such a feeling of inadequacy.  My self esteem was affected so much, it was difficult in the moment to think of “how fascinating” my failure had been.  Upon reflection that evening, I did a self coaching appreciative Inquire to prepare myself for my session the following day…. In that process I developed a provocative proposition (something aspirational that you state in the present tense a possibility to live into an A) for myself which I will not forget. It goes like this… I dance skillfully to the rhythm of transformation!  I kept repeating it to myself and was able to dance with the process the next day.  I was reminded that deep learning seldom happens in the presence of perfection. So for those of you who have not done the Purposeful TeamsTM WFA, I highly recommend it
